Dr. A. Saidi, Secretary General (Iran)
In early 1974, the international Commission for the Geological map of the world (CGMW) in Paris intrusted the preparation and compilation of geological maps of the Middle East to the Geological Survey of Iran (GSI) due to its substantial experience in this region. In 1974 CGMW General Assembly proposed to Dr. Abdolazim Haghipour to take over the Vice-Presidency for the Middle East and he was duely elected.
Responsibilities of the Geological Survey of Iran (GSI) in CGMW

select list of Iran acheivments is as follows
- Seismotectonic Map of the World in 1:5 M scale by Dr. Abdolazim Haghipour from the GSI.

Inauguration Office of Middle East Commission for the Geological Map of the World (CGMW) in Oslo (2008)
In the International Geological Congress Oslo 2008, the vice presidency of the Middle East sub commission of CGMW was given to GSI, represented by Dr.Abdollah Saidi.
Inauguration of Middle East Commission for the Geological Map of the World (CGMW) Office in Tehran
It was established and inaugurated by Mr. Ali Akbar Mehrabian, Minister of Industries and Mines of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Mr. Mohammad Taghi Korehie, Deputy Minister and General Director of GSI.
Up to now, all of these activities were carried out in a non-centralized way by different departments of GSI. Considering the expansion of these activities, there is a need for a regional bureau. Inauguration of CGMW bureau in Iran – GSI as the main trustee of making maps in the Middle East contributes greatly to centralization and finalization of the yielded responsibilities. Preparation of these maps and having a specific physical space to do so is important. One of the primary aspects is to progress the level of GSI in the Middle East, Asia and the world and enhance the knowledge and abilities of Iranian and GSI geologists. This will be of great importance to obtain complete and comprehensive information of the Middle East geology and tectonics, metallogeny, seismology etc. Having the information in the level of the Middle East can lead to scientific and economical development in the form of mutual contribution between the Middle Eastern countries and can base more mutual international contributions considering the geological and exploring similarities of middle eastern countries.
