CGMW Commission for the Geological Map of the World

In the framework of scientific cooperation between the Geological Survey of Iran (GSI) and Commission for the Geological Map of the World (CGMW) and following preparation of geological, tectonic and seismotectonic maps of the Middle-East, preparing Metallogenic Map of the Middle-East was ceded to the GSI by the CGMW.
Collecting Middle-East country's metallogenic data, legend of metallogenic map was compiled in two geologic and metallogenic sections. It was reviewed by the GSI experts and Secretary General for the Metallogenic Maps of the CGMW, Dr. Hambeck from the South Africa.
Finalizing map legend, basic geological map was prepared and metallogenic data were added to this map. This map presented in the 31st International Geological Congress in Norway and it was suggested to be reviewed by Dr. Eduardo Zappettini from Argentina, new Secretary General for the Metallogenic Maps of the CGMW.

Geological Map of the Middle-East is the second version of the Middle-East geological map that is preparing by the Geological Survey of Iran (GSI). This map is prepared in the framework of Commission for the Geological Map of the World (CGMW) maps to be compiled with the map of Asia's other parts. Preparation of this map was proposed by Dr. A. Haghipour and approved on the general assembly of the CGMW. GSI has effectively participated in the CGMW meetings during last 40 years. On the other hand, the GSI has technically been the most active geological organization in the Middle-East that had prepared several international maps; in this respect preparing the 2nd version of the Geological Map of the Middle-East was ceded to the GSI.

Considering responsibility of Dr. Haghipour, as CGMW Vice-President for the Middle-East, he prepared Seismotectonic Map of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan and presented it to the CGMW. This map published in 1984 by the CGMW & UNESCO. Furthermore, it was named "an innovation in preparing international geological maps" by the Secretary General of UNESCO in the CGMW General Assembly that was held in Paris.
Following preparation of this map, CGMW and People Republic of China's representative proposed separately that Dr. Haghipour to be supervisor of Seismotectonic Map of the South East Asia and Seismotectonic Map of China and neighboring regions respectively. But, due to his responsibility for the Middle-East maps and proposing establishment of an international institute for seismology and earthquake engineering in Iran, he preferred first to prepare Seismotectonic Map of the Middle-East. Seismotectonic Map of the Middle-East was prepared making use of necessary data and presented as a contribution to the UN-International Decade for Natural Disasters Reduction (IDNDR). It was published by the CGMW and the Geological Survey of Iran in 1992.

In 1990, Dr. Haghipour requested Dr. Mehdi Alavi to cooperate in preparation of Seismotectonic Map of the Middle-East by preparing "Tectonic Map" of the region. He accepted and prepared map which was published by the Geological Survey of Iran in 1991 as a separate map to be structural basic map for "Seismotectonic Map of the Middle-East".
